Singapore, 23 June 2009 - Reaching out to an audience 1,500 strong during this year’s Singapore Arts festival, The Crab Flower Club had both the media and the public raving about its stellar cast, powerful script, inspiring music and lavish set and costumes.

crab flower club

The Crab Flower Club is set in a noble household in the Qing dynasty, centred around 5 daughters who gather on the eve of their father’s 60th birthday. They meet to prepare a delicately complex feast of crabs for their patriarch, and more importantly, to set up an all-women poetry club. As each protagonist conjures up her own recipe, she also lays bare her intelligence, talent and desire on the culinary table.

Acclaimed for his design and literary flair, playwright and director Goh Boon Teck’s latest work is based on poems in Cao Xue Qin’s masterpiece, Dream of the Red Chamber. The Crab Flower Club is a calligraphic foray into the sensitive and simmering world of the female protagonists, accompanied by Franz Liszt’s Symphonic Poem – Les Preludes, with sound design by Darren Ng.

Acclaimed Malaysian actress Nell Ng will be re-instating her role in the show, while stellar actresses Emma Yong, Karen Tan and Yeo Yann Yann will join this re-staging of The Crab Flower Club. We are also pleased to introduce promising new-comer Ang Ru-Chen.

Once again, The Crab Flower Club promises to caress your innermost emotions and sensitivity. Running for a limited season, The Crab Flower Club will be served from 20th August till 29th August. Tickets are available at SISTIC from 18th June.

A: Wu chang. We have bonded and I believe we can go further than what we have accomplished. Our
journey has just begun.

Q: What do you hope to see different in this restaging?
A: It's our director's call and I trust Boon Teck to do his magic again.

Q: Are you excited about working on the same role, but with new cast members?
A: Yes, I'm excited. It'll be interesting to create a different kind of fireworks with the new sisters.

Q: Why would you recommend this show to the audience?
A: It's aesthetically beautiful, funny, poignant and it could happen in your own household too.

Q: What advice do you have for the new cast members about wearing the 6-inch shoes…
A: Practice, shoe pads and the ability to endure pain for the sake of art. Hehehe!
